Rohtak, May 1
Under its ongoing campaign of teaching a befitting lesson to illegal beneficiaries of Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards, the Rohtak Range Police has registered criminal cases against over 400 residents of four districts falling under its jurisdiction - Rohtak, Jhajjar, Panipat and Sonepat - who have been receiving monthly old age pension and other benefits by getting their BPL cards made despite not being entitled for that.
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Rohtak Range, V. Kamaraja, informed here on Saturday that as many as 105 residents of Rohtak district, 103 of Panipat, 102 of Sonepat and 100 illegal beneficiaries of Jhajjar district had so far been booked under Sections 420, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC while such sorts of cases had also been registered in Karnal, the another district of this range.
“The twin motive behind the registration of the cases is to teach a lesson to ineligible beneficiaries who don’t hesitate in violating rules just to avail extra benefits and to preserve the rights of bona fide beneficiaries so that they can get the benefits of BPL card without any hindrance,” said the IGP, adding that a public notice in this regard was issued in order to make the people aware of the special drive.
He maintained that a stipulated time of at least one month was given to erring beneficiaries to get their BPL cards cancelled or withdrawing their claim for old age pension before carrying out the drive but they did not pay any heed to it. Hence, they were now facing the police action in this regard.
“Besides these cases, a large numbers of complaints from all the five districts are still pending in his office wherein it has been alleged that those people have been enjoying the benefits of BPL cards, who have been earning hefty amounts through their jobs or well-established business and enjoying all facilities like a furnished house, personal vehicle and mobile phones,” said V. Kamaraja, adding that the police had also been investigating the role of those district officials into the matter, who had issued the BPL cards to not entitled people without inquiring the facts thoroughly.
The IGP said criminal cases under prevention of corruption act would also be registered against the government officials if they found guilty during the investigation in this connection. Recovery would be done from the erring beneficiaries against whom the criminal cases for availing undue benefits under the BPL scheme had been registered, maintained Kamaraja. (EoM)
